Walking Football Sessions
Black Country in Motion is a Sport England funded project which aims to get people across the Black Country into some form of physical activity. These areas include Wolverhampton, Walsall, Dudley and Sandwell, with 2 specific zones in each area. The 2 zones we focus on in Wolverhampton are Bilston East and East Park.
The sessions we run are fun, informal, engaging, take place in local community venues and where possible are free to attend. Our sessions are delivered by local volunteers who we fund through coaching qualifications, first aid qualifications, DBS checks and other development opportunities. The volunteers then lead the sessions or assist the lead volunteer with paperwork and the session as a whole.
SPOTLIGHT ON: WALKING FOOTBALL
MONDAY 4-5PM, SPORTS HALL, BERT WILLIAMS LEISURE CENTRE,
NETTLEFOLDS WAY, BILSTON, WOLVERHAMPTON, WV14 0EF
Our free Walking Football session has been running since May 2015 and is now one of our most well attended sessions. We caught up with 2 of our most regular participants, Gez and Richard, to hear their thoughts on the session:
"I come to Walking Football for the exercise, the social side of the game and the guys here are good lads."
"I just love football, I used to play a lot when I was younger and I love the concept of walking football. Walking football is ideal to get into especially if, like me, you've had ill health or an injury. Not only do I enjoy it but the other people that come every week really make it, they're lovely people and have the same ethic. They just want to play and have fun"
"I'm quite an active person anyway but the social side of this makes it even better. Exercise helps you with everything, it helps me keep up with my grandkids and enjoy my family and it's a great stress reliever"
"If you're thinking of coming along go for it, come along, there's no pressure. Just come and do your own thing, no one makes comments such as he's no good, she's no good, no-one does that. It's always been my philosophy that the first step is the greatest one- if you can get the initial momentum to get off your backside and do it that's the hardest. Your biggest regret will be not going for it"
We'd also like to take this opportunity to thank Decathlon, especially their Wednesbury store, for their very generous voucher which has enabled us to purchase much needed equipment for our sessions. Walking Football was one of the sessions that has benefited from this equipment and it was greatly appreciated by both the project and the players, so thank you Decathlon!
